How to find employment in a tough economy

July 20, 2009 — Many of our counties are struggling with unusually high unemployment. This recession is definitely more trying than any in recent memory. April's General Conference included a number of talks that brought peace and comfort to those struggling with economic challenges.

Our goal is helping members find employment in this tough economy. Bishop Richard G. Edgley's conference address, "This is Your Phone Call", has tremendous ideas and suggestions for priesthood and Relief Society leaders to assist the unemployed. We are hearing many recent employment successes that have come through the ward efforts Bishop Edgley spoke of.

"John" barely graduated high school, has limited reading ability and marginal social skills. With the help of an extremely caring bishop and our office missionaries a plan was formulated. Assignments were given, follow through was excellent and within a week this young man many feared was unemployable had a job!

Several wards in the area have so many unemployed members bishops are requesting members fast and pray specifically for those in need.

Many of the members we are working with talk about the help they are receiving from their wards and quorums. Some have been assigned job coaches to help them through their job search.

I have had the opportunity to work for LDS Employment for thirty years and it is exciting to see the Church in action! I am firmly convinced that as we work together, our unemployed members will receive the help they need and their lives will be enriched as they continue on the path to self-reliance and service.

This is a great article, and I appreciate what the Spokane LDS Employment Office does for the community. The best thing for me when I get laid off is to get reemployed quickly. I have been laid off three times in the past twelve years, and know how disstressing this can be both financially and emotionally. I find that getting back into the work force immediately gives me more pride than waiting on unemployment. Sykes formerly ICT Group is a great way for those who have been laid off or for young people looking for an office environment to start a new career. Please check out www.ictgroup.com for more details or put in an application at 10220 East Sprague Avenue.
