July 26, 2010 — For those naysayers already talking about summer winding down and the launch of back-to-school sales, this week's recreation guide makes it clear that the warm season is just hitting full stride. The late July agenda includes fantastic flights over Lake Coeur d'Alene, free movies, intriguing lessons about insects, a fun street fair and an Inland Northwest luau. Area LDS youth should also mark their calendars (and register) for a special event at the beginning of August.

CdA Parasail and Watersports
Does the prospect of flying through the rarified air above Lake Coeur d'Alene sound like fun? Then give Coeur d'Alene Parasail and Watersports a call this summer. Participants soar across the sky in a parasail (resembling a miniature hot air balloon) courtesy of a hydraulic system attached to a boat. Cost is $60 per person or $90 for two. Group rates are available. Weight restrictions apply. To learn more, call 208-765-2999 or visit www.cdaparasail.com.

Free movies
The zany adventures of "Wallace and Gromit" (rated G) will be featured as part of the free summer film festival at the Spokane Valley Cinemas, 14760 E. Indiana, next to the Spokane Valley Mall, this Tuesday through Thursday. For more information, call 509-922-2590. The classic story of "Mary Poppins" will air at Pavillion Park at dusk on Friday, July 30. To learn more about the free summer movie and concert series at Pavillion Park, call 509-755-6726 or visit www.pavillionpark.org.

Bug tales
A story about insects and bug-themed arts and crafts will be on the agenda during kids story time at the Spokane Valley Barnes and Noble, 12004 E. Main Ave., on Wednesday, July 28 at 2 p.m. To learn more, call 509-893-8400.

Spokane luau
A taste of the Hawaiian Islands is the theme of a special event sponsored by the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department on Saturday, July 31. Participants will kayak along the Little Spokane River, leaving from Nine Mile Falls, and enjoy a family-style Hawaiian dinner from Aloha Island Grill afterward. Registration is required. Cost is $37 per person. For more information, call 509-625-6200.

CdA Street Fair
Over 200 vendors will take part in the Coeur d'Alene Street Fair beginning Friday, July 30. The annual event in downtown Coeur d'Alene includes arts and crafts, food and music and is held in conjunction with Art on the Green at North Idaho College. To learn more, call 208-415-0116.

Multi-Stake Youth Conference
A Multi-Stake Youth Conference will take place Aug. 6-7 in Spokane. The event for youth ages 14-18 begins on Friday, Aug. 7 with games, activities and a dance at the Spokane County Interstate Fairgrounds. On Saturday, Aug. 8, the schedule at the Spokane Convention Center includes music, speakers and a community service project. Participants are asked to bring an article of new or slightly-used clothing on Friday to benefit area social service agencies. Register online at www.spokaneyouthconf.org. Deadline is Aug. 1.
