The upcoming week also includes lessons about fish, water and the special birthday of a North Idaho town. The recreational lineup also features free movies, soaring jets and complimentary string music in the park. Enjoy the weather and the events!

Pioneer Day celebrations
The Spokane East Stake will celebrate Pioneer Day on Saturday, July 24 with an event called "Bring Them In," beginning with a pioneer-themed parade at 8:15 a.m. A musical program honoring pioneers will follow at 8:45. A breakfast of sourdough griddle cakes, buffalo hash, eggs and homemade bread and jam will begin at 9:15. A variety of games and activities - including tug-of-war, handcart races and a revered pioneer tradition, Frisbee golf, will start at 10:15. The event, at the East Stake Center and pavilion, 13608 E. 40th, is free and open to the public.

The Spokane North Stake is celebrating Pioneer Day with a touch of authenticity. The youth in the stake are going on a pioneer-style handcart trek. Stake leaders have been planning the trek for nearly a year. The youth, 14 and up, will leave for the trek on July 22 and get back the evening of Pioneer Day. They'll trek on private property, near Springdale, WA., in 1800s-style clothing, pulling real handcarts. Registration for the event was online; so far 250 youth in the North Stake have signed up for the trek. For more information go to www.spokaneyouthtrek.org.
