July 6, 2010 — This week's lineup of summer fun includes an old-fashioned rodeo, free movies, a lesson in competitive chess and a worthwhile safety check. Cyclists, runners and walkers of all ages will also find events featuring fun and challenging terrains.
Cheney Rodeo
Hitch up the wagon and head to the West Plains for the 43rd annual Cheney Rodeo beginning Friday, July 9. In addition to the usual array of rodeo events and activities, the agenda includes a parade through downtown Cheney on Saturday, July 10, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $12 in advance, or $16 on event day. Tickets for kids 7 to 12 are $6. Kids 6 and under with a parent are admitted free. Tickets are available by calling 509-235-4848. Those interested in hoofing along a 5K course on Saturday can sign up for a community fun run set for 8 a.m. in Veterans Memorial Park, Fourth and D Street. Liberty Lake movie
The free summer movie/concert series continues at Pavillion Park in Liberty Lake this Friday with the screening of "Rescuers Down Under." Films begin at dusk. To learn more, visit www.pavillionpark.org.
Kids' chess tournament
Mobius Childrens Museum will be the site of a Kids Chess Tournament on Saturday, July 10, from 10 a.m. to noon for ages 5-10. Representatives from the Spokane Chess Club will be in attendance to coach and instruct. Cost is $5 per participant. The museum is located at Riverpark Square in downtown Spokane, 808 W. Free summer films
Movie theaters in the Coeur d'Alene and Spokane areas are offering free family movies this summer at a variety of locations. Liberty Lake Loop
Lace up your running (and walking) shoes and line up for the Liberty Lake Loop, a 4-mile scenic course this Saturday at 8 a.m. A kids' race (a quarter to 1.5 miles, depending on age) will take place at 9:30 a.m. Registration is $10 - or $20 with a T-shirt. North Idaho bike tour
Olympic gold medalist Kristin Armstrong is working to promote health and fitness in the region by promoting a series of recreational bike events in three Idaho communities on Saturday, July 10. The program will raise money for the North Idaho Centennial Trail. Courses range from 15, 32 and 62 miles. Free car seat check
Uncertain about the fit of your child's car seat? Safe Kids of Kootenai County will sponsor a free safety seat inspection this Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot at Kohl's, 545 W. Aqua Ave. off Highway 95 in Coeur d'Alene.
