June 21, 2010 — Folk dancing, logging, quilting and barn dancing are all a part of our western American heritage. The latest guide includes a few events and organizations that keep these old traditions alive.
Spokane Area Folk Dancing
The greater Spokane area hosts over 50 square dancing, round dancing and clogging dances, workshops and events each month. With something happening almost every day of the week, the area features 27 clubs and associations in the greater Spokane area covering Clarkston in the south to Colville in the north and Cheney in the west to Coeur d'Alene in the east. Tall timber at the MAC
From lumber camps and "lady loggers" to "river pigs" and railroads, the upcoming timber exhibit at the MAC explores the many facets of an industry that was a cornerstone of Inland Northwest development. You'll see union pins, log brands, caulk boots, mess tent dishes, crosscut saws, plenty of stories, and much more make this exhibit. Visit www.northwestmuseum.org for more information.
Missoula Quilters Guild Show
Featured quilters at the Missoula Quilters Guild Show this year will be Allyson Baldwin and Cynthia Spethman, showcasing many of their extraordinary quilts. In addition, over 400 spectacular quilts made by guild members will be available for your viewing. There will also be sewing machine, quilt and fabric raffles; 30 vendor booths; demonstrations; a silent auction and a boutique. Food and beverages will be available. The show is June 25, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and June 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Big Sky High School, 3100 South Ave W. Missoula, Mont.
Hog Heaven Band at the Dahmen Barn
The Hog Heaven Big Band comes to the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown June 26 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. to play music from the 1920s to the 1940s. Folks come to dance or listen. This energetic 16-piece band has been regularly playing at the barn since its grand opening October 2006. They will play each fourth Saturday of the month through November.
