May 31, 2009 — Leaders of the Washington Spokane Valley Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today announced the creation of a new ward to help accommodate the growth of the church within stake boundaries. The Mica Peak ward will encompass certain adjoining areas in Liberty Lake, Greenacres and the Saltese Flats. With the addition of the new ward, the Spokane Valley Stake will have a total of nine wards, including five south of the Spokane River.
"A ward is more than a congregation," said Spokane Valley Stake President Brian Pitcher in announcing the change to stake members. "Rather, a ward is a community and extended family where the gospel of Jesus Christ is taught, burdens are shared, support is given and service is rendered. It is truly a choice experience to be part of a local ward."
The Mica Peak ward was created from the eastern-most portions of the Saltese ward. In addition to the new ward, boundaries were adjusted for three existing wards including the Saltese ward, the Greenacres ward and the Sullivan ward. Following these changes, each ward has approximately between 300 - 500 members each.
The stake also announced the appointment of two new bishops. Verne Reed of Liberty Lake was named as Bishop of the Mica Peak ward with Blake Ballif of Greenacres being named as the new Bishop of the Saltese ward. A bishop in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a lay leader who oversees the local congregation.
