Hunger and Homelessness Week sheds light on ways to help

November 16, 2009 — Churches and social services agencies throughout the Inland Northwest are calling attention to Spokane Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 16-20.
The week begins with a homeless winter wear drive on Monday, Nov. 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Central United Methodist Church, 518 W. Third Ave. in Spokane. Residents are encouraged to drop off new and gently used adult coats, hats, gloves, scarves, socks and thermal underwear.
On Tuesday, Nov. 17, personal care products can be donated at Global Credit Union, 1520 W. Third Ave. in Spokane from 7 to 10 a.m. Recommended items include unused shampoos, conditioner, feminine products, toothpaste, toothbrushes, brushes, combs, razors and shaving cream.
A basic needs drive will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at the SNAP office in downtown Spokane, 212 S. Wall. Paper towels, laundry soap, toilet paper, dish soap, mops, brooms and cleaning supplies will be collected.
Central United Methodist Church will host a community dinner and conversation about hunger and homelessness titled "Food for Thought" on Thursday, Nov. 19 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Finally, on Friday, Nov. 29, a memorial service to honor those homeless who have passed away will be held at Westminster Congregational Church of Christ, 411 S. Washington in Spokane.
